 Principal's Message Minimize

November 10, 2009

Dear Victor Parents/Guardians/Caregivers:

I first want to state my apologies for not getting a formal “Principal’s Message” out to you since the beginning of the school year. As you know, an abundance amount of information goes out to you by me through the Bulletins page on the Victor website, via our weekly E-Blasts, and our frequent Teleparent messages. Still, all of this correspondence should not supplant a “personal” message from your Principal and I do apologize.

November is the month where we recognize all for which we are thankful. I personally try and do my best to regularly show my appreciation and gratitude towards all members of our superb faculty, staff, PTA and volunteers, but given that it is November, the month of being thankful, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all people who make Victor Elementary School a fantastic place to work, learn and grow.

To our Victor faculty and staff- I give thanks. Your allegiance to Victor students, willingness to take on new challenges, and your professionalism are only a few of your many attributes that make Victor Elementary school so successful. During these difficult times with fewer resources and larger class sizes your resiliency and dedication say so much about you!

Thank you to our PTA. I am very grateful for your selfless dedication. You have the best interests of all students in mind. The enriching activities such as Adventures In Art and the family centered programs like Hand N Hand for Reading and Family Math Night, and your fiscal support by purchasing classroom materials and sponsorship of capital upgrades, enhance the lives of many of our students and members of our community. This would not be possible without your dedication and love for Victor Elementary.

Thank you to our Parent Volunteers. Teachers are clearly overburdened. Larger class sizes, limited means, and the challenge of meeting the needs of all the diverse learners can add pressure to any teacher. Your help alleviates some of this pressure and allows for our children to get the best education possible. Without you, Victor would not be the distinguished school that it is.

Thank you parents! I have worked at several schools within Torrance during my fourteen years as teacher, Assistant Principal and Principal. I do have to say that Victor kids are some of the most respectful, hard working, and more importantly, happy, students that I have interacted with. This is a huge credit to you! I thank you for raising such a fantastic group of kids.

In closing, I would like to share a couple of “business” related items. Please visit our website to see the schoolwide goals we have established for the 2009- 2010 school year. Also, our PTA needs your support, if you have not done so already, please make your direct donation today. Information can be found on our website.

I wish you and your family a wonderful Holiday Season, (yes it is approaching fast!). Do know that my door is always open to you.

Sincerely,

William Baker

Principal

Conflict Manager Training

On Thursday, November 5th forty-seven fourth and fifth grade students were trained at WHS to become Victor Conflict Managers.  These students will help any Victor student who is having an issue or disagreement with another student resolve this conflict in a peaceful, nonaggressive way. To get an inside look at what took place during this training, please click here.

Halloween Parade 2009

Victor students and staff celebrated Halloween in full force during our Halloween Parade on Friday, October 30th.  Click here to see all of the wonderful costumes that were on display.

Family Math Night

Over 100 families and 300 people participated in our recent Family Math Night for our 2nd and 3rd grade families.  Parents, students, and siblings participated in many fun math activities.  Please click here to see pictures from this wonderful evening.

Adventures In Art

With sponsorship from the Victor PTA and with the support of parent volunteers, Victor students are able to participate in the Adventures In Art program. Our first project of the year involves students painting a Sumi-e poem and creating a brushstroke painting in the style of Japanese Masters.  See how that Masters in Mr. Flanders' 2nd grade classroom and Mrs. Fink's 3rd grade classroom did in creating an ink picture and Haiko poem by clicking here.

21st Century Classrooms

Victor is using the latest in technology to highly engage our students with their learning and to help them grow in our technologically rich world.  Examples of this can be seen in many of our classrooms including Ms. Atkisson's 2nd grade class and Mrs. Ager's 5th grade class.

In Ms. Atkisson's classroom, students use netbooks and a Smartboard to show their understanding of their Junior Master Gardeners program. Please click here to visit Ms. Atkisson's 21st Century classroom.

In Mrs. Ager's class each day a student is chosen to be a Daily Reporter.  Their assignment is to write a short article about the events that occurred during class that day.  Using a computer at home or one of Mrs. Ager's classroom computers, students type their news stories and submit them via email, floppy disc, CD, or flash drive.  This give students the opportunity to write using technology.  To view Room 6's Daily Blog, please click here.

Hand N Hand for Reading Day

On Friday, October 9th over 300 Victor Families participated in our annual Hand N Hand for Reading event.  Family members got to eat lunch with their children while enjoying some reading time together.

To view pictures from this wonderful Day, please click here.

Victor API Scores exceed 900!

We are very proud to announce that Victor Elementary School scored 905 on the 2008 - 2009 API scores.  To view a full power point presentation on our school data, please click here.  Congratulations to all teachers, staff, community members, and parents for a job well done!

Victor Elementary Students Excel!!

Preliminary 2009 STAR test data shows that 77% of Victor students in grades 2 – 5 are performing at the proficient/advanced level on California Standards Tests (CST) in Language Arts. Not bad for a school with over 30% of our students being English Language Learners! Even better, 85% of our students in grade 2 – 5 are performing at levels proficient/ advance according to the CST in Mathematics.  Please see the graphs below to see how we compared to the rest of the district.
